Debunking Myths About Food Pantries

In today’s blog, we will uncover some of the common misconceptions about food pantries. Many nonprofits have stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding them, but often untrue. Let’s dive into some of them!

“Food Pantries Are Only for Homeless People”

This myth could not be further from the truth!

While people without housing may go to food pantries for assistance, most pantry users are housed but struggling. There are many reasons people turn to food pantries that have nothing to do with being unhoused. Factors such as income, expenses, job loss, and unexpected circumstances can all lead someone to seek assistance.

Regardless of a person’s reason for visiting a food pantry, no false assumptions should be made about them. Even if someone is housed, that does not mean they don’t face hardships. It is commendable when people ask for food assistance in the first place, because asking for help can be an extremely vulnerable act. Whether someone is unhoused, or someone is housed but going through a difficult time, each person deserves help and deserves to have one less thing to worry about.

“The Food is Expired or Low-Quality”

This common misconception is very far from the truth! It is untrue for most pantries, and especially untrue here at Yad Ezra.
As mentioned in other blogs, Yad Ezra is a total choice pantry, so we purchase the majority of our food. We purchase food from wholesalers and from regular grocery stores. The food we buy is no different from what an individual would buy at the supermarket.

We care about our clients and want to ensure they are receiving healthy food items, not expired or unhealthy items.

“Food Pantries Only Give Canned Goods”

Food pantries offer a wide variety of food, not just canned goods.

Looking at our own inventory, clients receive items just like they would at a grocery store. We have everything from fresh produce to meat to dairy and more!

It is true that food donations are primarily canned or boxed goods, but we also purchase food to provide our clients with many options to choose from.

“Donating Money is Less Useful Than Donating Food”

This myth actually surprises many people! Any type of donation goes a long way, but here at Yad Ezra, we rely mostly on monetary donations.

Being a kosher food pantry, we must ensure that any food donation made to us is kosher and approved for distribution to our clients.

Through monetary donations, we can select the exact food our clients want, such as kosher items, and ensure our inventory is sufficient to feed our clients each week.

“Pantries Only Operate on Holidays”

Food pantries do receive a lot of media coverage around holiday times, but we operate every week of the year!

We hold serving sessions four days a week, while also offering the option of delivery and an anonymous pick-up window.

During the holiday season, many clients come through our doors, but we also serve 1,500 families each month.

“If the Pantry has Enough Money, Volunteering isn’t Necessary”

This last myth we will debunk is entirely untrue!

Nonprofits are small organizations that often operate with a small team of full-time employees. Here at Yad Ezra, we are made up of ten staff members, so our volunteers play a large role in ensuring our serving sessions and garden run smoothly.
