The Giving Gardens Assistant at Yad Ezra
Giving Gardens is a program at Yad Ezra, Michigan’s only kosher food pantry. The Giving Gardens strives to continue to meet the needs of Yad Ezra’s pantry clients and improve their food security and quality of life. The Giving Gardens programs educate the community about the concept of farm-to-table food and offers resources and opportunities to encourage people to eat more fresh produce and be more self-sufficient. The Gardens include a greenhouse, garden beds and an offsite 7000 square foot garden.
The Garden Assistant will participate in all aspects of the fall season at the Giving Gardens. The duties will be primarily outdoors. The Garden Assistant does not need prior knowledge. Social media knowledge is helpful but not required. Hours include daytime and some evenings, pre-determined jointly. Job duties will include the following:
- Harvest, wash and package produce for distribution
- All aspects of plant care from seed to harvest
- Trellising, training, and pruning
- Direct and engage with volunteers and clients
- Assist with pest management
- Organization of equipment
- Logging data from the gardens
Computer and Administrative Related:
- Help with social media content
- Assist during Yad Ezra client distribution sessions for Giving Gardens and Yad Ezra general food distribution
Must be a good communicator, able to respect privacy of clients and be able to bend/lift up to 40 lbs. Note, outdoor work in a garden implies getting dirty and seeing bugs; assistant must be enthusiastic regarding these possibilities. Team players only!
Pay rate commensurate with experience starting at $16/hour. Starts immediately, position runs through October with opportunity to extend or transition to part of full-time status.
